CALL FOR ENTRIES – New York Photo Awards 2010

Submissions will be accepted until April 30, 2010.

The New York Photo Awards 2010 (NYPH’10) will once again honor talented photographers from all over the world whose exceptional work breaks new ground visually, intellectually, and aesthetically. The Awards will give these visual artists the opportunity to reach key decision makers in the photographic community and the editorial, fine art, and commercial worlds. All winning entries will also be automatically eligible for inclusion in the New York Photo Awards 2010 Annual.

Stour Valley Arts and ArtSway are seeking to commission a UK based artist

Stour Valley Arts and ArtSway are seeking to commission a UK-based artist, working in any media, to produce a new body of work resulting from research undertaken in the locations of both commissioning partners. The artist will be given time and financial resources to explore and research the areas in question to produce at least one exhibition (scheduled at ArtSway in April 2011), with critical and practical support from ArtSway and Stour Valley Arts.For further information about ArtSway, and details about the commission, please contact: Peter Bonnell, Curator on peter.bonnell@artsway.org.uk

Previous commissions include Super Kingdom a development of new animal habitats within King’s Wood. These luxury homes are modelled on the imperious palaces of Stalin, Ceauscescu and Mussolini and offer nesting and over-winter sites to native and migrant species.

Noma Bar – Bitter Sweet

Noma Bar’s work is simple yet striking. His witty editorial illustrations use the negative space of one image to form another, creating interlocking jigsaws of graphic forms.  The library at UCA Maidstone has recently purchased a copy of the new book, Noma Bar – Negative Space.

Manga Sweatshop Artists at the Maidstone Hazlitt Arts Centre

This is a rare chance to see Sweatshop Studios work in exhibition. Led by Emma Vieceli (winner of Tokyopop‘s first UK and Ireland Rising Stars of Manga competition), the ‘Sweatdrop Artists’ will be showing their anime storyboards.

The Sketchbook Pop-Up Shop: showcasing the work of key contributing illustrators

Monday to Saturday: 10am-7pm, Sundays: 12noon-6pm

The Sketchbook Pop-Up Shop will run for 3 weeks following the launch of the second issue of Sketchbook Magazine and will offer visitors a chance to interact with a series of Sketchbook’s contributing guest bloggers, artists, designers, illustrators and editors who are all key figures in the contemporary fashion and arts community. These guests, including famous blogger Susie Bubble, will be holding scheduled educational workshops, lectures and discussions, which will be digitally streamed through an interactive live thread. A competition will also be running throughout, offering visitors the opportunity to submit illustrations to be used on the front cover of a future issue.

For her first solo exhibition in the UK, the Swedish artist Petra Bauer will explore the history of UK film collectives from the 1970s and 1980s. Through ‘Me, You, Us, Them’, Bauer’s intention is to re-examine claims made by political filmmakers at this time, and bring the various issues that preoccupied the period’s practitioners into view against the concerns of contemporary artists.

The artist’s new film, co-produced by Focal Point Gallery and Lunds Konsthall, was shot in a television studio in Stockholm, and features an interview between Bauer and the well-known Swedish celebrity and journalist, Stina Lundberg Dabrowski
