The London Design Festival is a city-wide celebration of design that takes place over nine days.  There is a broad range of activities on offer, most of which are free to enter.  Events taking place during the festival cover graphic design, furniture, interiors, fashion, and other design areas.

UCA graduate Christina Lai is showing her ceramic doorknobs ‘Contaminated’ and a mixed media piece entitled ‘Chosen or Choice’ at Artstyle Gallery in the Walnuts Shopping Centre, Orpington, Kent until 3rd September. 
Also on display are a diverse range of art forms including painting, printing, photography, ceramics, digital art, mosaic and bespoke painted furniture.

: output competition for students

Deadline: February 18, 2011  

The competition is open to anyone who is currently studying communication design, product design, architecture, interaction design or film at a university or a college is eligible to participate. Students who have graduated within the last 12 months may also submit final degree works.

All projects submitted to the : output competition will be eligible for the : output Grand Prix of 3,000 Euro.

International Competition of Packaging Design – Call for Entries

The theme of the first category Product package is „Package for a national product“. The second category Different View aims to attract attention of graphic designers and illustrators. The theme of this inspirational category has become “Book as a package for words“.

Entries sent by postal service will be accepted from participants registered through online registration form. High school, college, university students, and designers of up to 30 years of age can register in two categories: Product Package and Different View. With their entries, participants do not include any CDs or portfolios; they can use the registration form, which provides room for description.

Jerwood Makers Open – Call for Submissions

Jerwood Makers Open is part of Jerwood Visual Arts (JVA), a contemporary gallery programme of awards, exhibitions and events at Jerwood Space, which then tours nationally. Jerwood Visual Arts aims to promote and celebrate the work of talented emerging artists across the disciplines of drawing, painting, sculpture, applied arts, photography and moving image. It also aims to make connections and provoke conversations within and across the different disciplines.

Call for submissions – Calling all makers at the Salisbury Arts Centre

Salisbury Arts Centre’s National Open Submission Exhibition 2010 will focus on Making, with a particular emphasis on process and materials including those traditionally associated with craft-based skills such as wood, ceramic, textiles and metal as well as synthetic and recycled materials.

If you are a maker/artist aged 16 and over, you could see your work exhibited at Salisbury Arts Centre and be in with a chance to win £200. Explore the Salisbury Arts Centre website for further information and to Download the Submission Form now.

The selection panel will include Katy Bevan (Crafts Council), Syann van Niftrik (Studio Jeweller) and Simon Barber (Evolver Magazine).

5TH WHITSTABLE BIENNALE 2010

The 5th Whitstable Biennale will open on Saturday 19 June 2010 on Whitstable’s main beach at 12 noon. The Biennale has commissioned major new works, all of which explore different aspects of performance and film. For two weeks the seaside town of Whitstable will be transformed into a centre for contemporary art.

Handmade at Fortnum & Mason

The upmarket London store opens it’s first craft exhibition next month, entitled “Handmade”. The exhibition will showcase crafts by established British makers, as well as emerging talents such as Hitomi Hosono and other recent graduates from the Royal College of Art. Fortnum’s commissioned a piece by ceramicist Helen Beard especially for the show.

The Honey Bee and the Hive

A new exhibition at Contemporary Applied Arts  showing work inspired by the honey bee and the hive starts on Friday 26 March 2010. Twenty eight artist craftsmen and women have worked in their studios to create an exhibition of useful and decorative objects, aiming to demonstrate the “wonder of the bee” and how important bees are to humanities continuing survival.
