UCA Illustration Print Fair

Students and staff from the BA Illustration department at UCA Maidstone will be having a Christmas print fair on Wednesday 7th December.  Illustrator Mireille Fauchon (a sessional tutor on the course) will talk about the launch of her new book, a new interpretation of The Prisoner of Zenda, and the importance of self publishing as a platform for emerging talent, before opening the fair at 12.30pm.

A Book Show : Brighton

A, is the first in a series of exhibitions which focus on the hand-made and self-published photobook.   The intention of the show is to display a wide range of work, from the short run, the limited edition, to the one off and ephemeral photobook.  Check out the exhibition website for further details.

Artists’ books : interviews with artists

The V&A website features interviews with several leading book artists, who discuss their route into publishing artists’ books, how they see artists’ books fitting in with contemporary art, and give recommendations of starting points for collecting artists’ books.

The book artists featured include Sarah Bodman, Jackie Batey,  John Dilnot and Angela Lorenz whose work all features in the artists’ books collections at University for the Creative Arts.

London Small Publishers Fair 2011

The Small Publishers Fair features publishers from around the world who specialise in artists’ books, zines and artists’ cards.  This year there will small press publishers from Canada, Mexico, and Korea; from France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium, and throughout the UK. 

The fair will include books by Mike Nicholson, a Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design at UCA Epsom, who publishes works as Ensixteen Editions.

The Laurence Sterne Trust : emblem of my work

In 1761, the 3rd volume of Tristram Shandy was published by Laurence Sterne, featuring a marbled image on page 169.  The marbled page in every copy of Volume III  is different – each impression being a unique hand-made image.

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of publication, the Laurence Sterne Trust invited 169 artists to redesign this page with an original design of their own.  The artists and illustrators who took part included John Baldessari, Tom Gauld, Professor Andrew Kötting and Ralph Steadman.  The pages produced can be viewed online on the Emblem of my work blog.

Faye Moorhouse wins D&AD award

Illustrator Faye Moorhouse (a graduate from the BA Illustration course at UCA Maidstone) recently won a D&AD “Best New Blood” Award for her illustrated book, The Cat Ladies of Czechoslovakia

Jonathan Safran Foer : Tree of codes

The library at UCA Maidstone has just acquired a copy of Jonathan Safran Foer’s new book, Tree of Codes, for its collection of artists’ books.  In order to write Tree of codes, the author took an English language edition of Bruno Schulz’s The street of crocodiles and cut into its pages, carving out a new story.  The new narrative can only be read by inserting a blank piece of paper behind each page.

Benedict Phillips talk

In a humorous and thought-provoking lecture artist Benedict Phillips will reveal his dyslexic projects, highlighting and examining presumptions about intelligence, communication and perception, unravelling the numerous misconceptions surrounding dyslexia and presenting the unusual advantages it brings.

Ilustrarte Children’s books illustrator Competition

Every two years, Ilustrarte is an opportunity to see the world’s best illustration and to bring together in Lisbon illustrators, writers and readers of all ages. Children’s books illustrators from all over the world are invited to take part in the Ilustrarte competition sending 3 original illustrations, unpublished or published after January 2009.

House of Illustration competition

The House of Illustration will be the world’s first centre dedicated to the art of illustration in all its forms.  The home of the House of Illustration will be in the King’s Cross regeneration area, and is due to open in a few years’ time.  In the meantime, in the initial House of Illustration competition, entrants were asked to produce a series of illustrations for The Folio Society’s new edition of the ‘The Outsider’ by Albert Camus.
