The London Design Festival is a city-wide celebration of design that takes place over nine days.  There is a broad range of activities on offer, most of which are free to enter.  Events taking place during the festival cover graphic design, furniture, interiors, fashion, and other design areas.

Youth Club : music subcultures archive

UCA has just taken out a subscription to Youth Club - an image database, covering all kinds of music and youth subcultures.  The site is based around a unique archive of over 80,000 photographs documenting the lifestyles, fashions, music and subcultures of young people from all around the world.

The  Cultural Research section provides links to information on every subculture imaginable; from Hippies to Hipsters, Surfers to Skinheads and New Romantics to New Age Travellers. This includes a extensive rundown of the each decade’s news headlines, integral film and music releases and events as well as essays from respected commentators.

This is Design is a celebration of the Design Museum’s Collection, examining the impact of design on the modern world, exploring the consequences of design and how it shapes our lives and contemporary culture.

Prototypes, drawings, couture samples, models, first editions and finished industrial objects will be on display, including highlights such as the original Mini and the Moulton bicycle, large scale architectural models like Norman Foster’s HSBC Bank headquarters in Hong Kong, UK road signs and an Anglepoise lamp.

Youth Club presents “It’s Something Hell’s”

“It’s Something Hell’s” is a celebration of Rockabilly, Rockers & Teds style past and present. PYMCA – Youth Club is a image database available through the University Library’s electronic resources containing images of youth culture through the ages. Ron Arad’s Curtain Call

For Curtain Call, Ron Arad has created a curtain made of 5,600 silicon rods, suspended from an 18 metre diameter ring - a canvas for films, live performance and audience interaction.  Artists taking part include Ori Gersht, (Professor / MA Supervisor at UCA Rochester), who will be showing his film Offering, which puts the audience in the middle of the bull ring to explore our feelings around bullfights.  Other featured artists include Mat Collishaw, Christian Marclay and David Shrigley.

Urban Outfitters wants to provide an area for creative new graduates to display their work and highlight their talent. Every day from the end of June and throughout July they will be featuring one graduate on their website.

Applications are open to designers, artists, illustrators and photographers.

eStream is the University Library’s system for digitally recording television and radio broadcasts. You can view programmes via a web browser similar to the way you would watch YouTube.

Access eStream on and off campus at http://www.estream.ucreative.ac.uk

For off campus use, please use your standard UCA computer login.
On campus you should not need to log in unless you are using Firefox or Safari.
