The latest installment of web series, Off Book, looks at artists working on film and television title sequences. Karin Fong and Peter Frankfurt discuss their Mad Men title sequence, as well as their well-known opening credits for David Fincher’s Se7en.
Ben Conrad explains how his title work integrated into the physical world of Ruben Fleischer’s Zombieland, allowing zombies to rampage right through floating letters announcing things like “Columbia Pictures” and “Produced by Gavin Polone,” and spelling out the numbered rules of post-apocalyptic survival even as the protagonists observed, bent, and broke them.

BFI Southbank, London
7th March 2012, 8:40 pm
The BFI is showing a selection of ground-breaking North American films from the late 1960s that focus on the structures of film and filmmaking. Highlighting camera movement, the cut and the film surface in their most condensed and exaggerated forms, and using flash-frames, mesmerising loops and rich block-colour, the resulting uncompromising works make for compelling, often hypnotic viewing and were designed to encourage states of heightened self-awareness.
The showing will include films by Paul Sharits, Owen Land, Ernie Gehr and Michael Snow. Please see the BFI website for the full programme or to book tickets.
