Leah Fusco Gallery

Leah Fusco – a graduate from the BA Illustration course at UCA Maidstone, and previous winner of the V&A Student Illustrator of the Year award – is opening a new illustration gallery in Rye this weekend.  Leah Fusco is known for her work depicting landscapes in Kent and Sussex, such as Romney Marsh, Dungeness and Beachy Head.  The new gallery will initially sell limited edition prints and original work by the artist, but will soon be selling work by other artists and illustrators.

Bar Shorts is a brand new bi-monthly short film and animation night curated by Chris Shepherd (a sessional animation tutor at UCA Maidstone) & 12Foot6.  The opening night will feature Grant Orchard’s Oscar nominated, BAFTA winning A Morning Stroll, Joseph Pierce’s The Pub, Phil Mulloy’s The Banker, as well as films by Tim Brunsden and Jesse Collett.

Ruth Anderson : Reflections

Ruth Anderson is both artist and curator of her photographic images. Through this exhibition she becomes the communicator of the relationship between reflection, consumerism and reality. She creates a conversation carefully coaxed into being through layers of captured reflection and exposes the viewer to a host of reflections within the spectacle of the high street.

UCA Illustration Print Fair

Students and staff from the BA Illustration department at UCA Maidstone will be having a Christmas print fair on Wednesday 7th December.  Illustrator Mireille Fauchon (a sessional tutor on the course) will talk about the launch of her new book, a new interpretation of The Prisoner of Zenda, and the importance of self publishing as a platform for emerging talent, before opening the fair at 12.30pm.

Artists’ books : interviews with artists

The V&A website features interviews with several leading book artists, who discuss their route into publishing artists’ books, how they see artists’ books fitting in with contemporary art, and give recommendations of starting points for collecting artists’ books.

The book artists featured include Sarah Bodman, Jackie Batey,  John Dilnot and Angela Lorenz whose work all features in the artists’ books collections at University for the Creative Arts.

The best of the Observer graphic short story prize

The Cape/Observer/Comica Graphic Short Story Prize has been running for five years, discovering and publishing the writers and artists of the future.  Graphic novelist Bryan Talbot recently picked out his favourite entries from the competition, including work by UCA Maidstone Illustration graduates Faye Moorhouse and Scott Dessert.

Baseline/UCA, students and graduates: 17 year collaboration

The close working relationship between the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), Maidstone and the international typographics magazine Baseline is the subject of an exciting new exhibition.
 
In the last 17 years Baseline has employed 20 students and graduates from UCA Maidstone’s Graphic Design: Visual Communication and Illustration courses.
 
Baseline’s editor and art director, Hans Reichert, said: “The relationship with UCA Maidstone has been hugely beneficial. We have worked with some incredibly talented and skilled people over the years and their contribution to the editorial design and layout of the magazine has been invaluable.

Hans, who is himself one of UCA’s honorary graduates, added: “There will be a diverse range of work on display, including some striking covers, posters layout and web designs.”

Guerrilla : Maidstone

Guerrilla Maidstone is a photography exhibition curated by UCA Photography & Media Arts student, Ali Farmer. 

The exhibition at The Mall is a showcase of work by photography students currently studying or graduated from UCA Maidstone, and Erasmus exchange host Dublin Institute of Technology.  With works by Fleur Alston, Amy Bindon, Elin Karlson, Ali Farmer, Ciuin Tracey, Treasa O Hanlon, Michalis Intzieyianni, Deidre McGing, Caitriona Lawless, Lyndsey Putt, Phoebe Gill, Noel Noblett, Florence Geary and Michelle Kleyr.

Faye Moorhouse wins D&AD award

Illustrator Faye Moorhouse (a graduate from the BA Illustration course at UCA Maidstone) recently won a D&AD “Best New Blood” Award for her illustrated book, The Cat Ladies of Czechoslovakia
