Mnemosyne by John Akomfrah showing at the BFI SouthBank Gallery

7 Jul

10 Jul 2010 – 30 Aug 2010

Mnemosyne is a new work by Black Audio Film Collective member and seminal filmmaker John Akomfrah which was created as part of Made in England, a partnership initiative developed by Arts Council England and BBC English Regions.

Akomfrah was given access to the BBC’s television, film and sound archives for Made in England, a project that reflects how England makes art and art makes England.  He chose to focus on the experience of migrant labour in the West Midlands to create Mnemosyne, a poetic essay on the themes of memory and migration.

Akomfrah’s work questions memory and suggests the possibility for endless re-interpretation of historical events by interweaving archival footage from 1960-1981, with contemporary ‘portraits’ of Birmingham and extracts of new work filmed in a remote snowy landscape.

The Hand Drawn Map Association

10 Jun

This website is an ongoing archive of user-submitted maps and other interesting diagrams created by hand.  It is full of fascinating creative work, including visualisations of journeys, histories, connections, and the memories and emotions associated with place.  Often the maps achieve an elegant simplicity, through unusual use of scale or the paring away of  detail which would be unnecessary to the reader.

Parasol unit presents Tabaimo

26 May

Tabaimo press release March 2010

An opportunity to see five installation works by Tabaimo, a critically acclaimed young Japanese animation artist, at London’s Parasol Unit Gallery 26 May – 6 August (Angel/Old Street tube station).

Her works are intimate and sometimes dark portrayals of Japanese domestic life, stylistically inspired by traditional Japanese prints and drawings, that thematise vulnerability, femininity, cultural critique and voyeurism.

Prof Suzanne Buchan, Director of the Animation Research Centre, will be giving one of a series of talks on Tabiamo’s work on 15th July 2010.
