Artist Brief for The Verey Woodland Illuminations at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village November 2015 – February 2016, part of the Watts Contemporary Programme

To design and install winter illuminations in the grounds and pathways surrounding Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village

Supported by Lady Verey

To design a light sculpture installation for the Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village woodland to:

– enhance visitors’ enjoyment of art and craft in the Artists’ Village

– attract more visitors to Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village during the winter months

– provide further interpretation of the Watts legacy, the environment and the ethos for the benefit of the public and students

– improve illumination of the woodlands and outdoor areas of the Artists’ Village

– be a feature for dark afternoons and evening events, creating a magical and /or mysterious atmosphere

-to design for the Gallery site and Limnerslease Woodlands

Design considerations:

  • to have a hand-made aesthetic using materials in sympathy with the Watts ethos
  • to relate to the architecture and Victorian/Edwardian collections and estate
  • design takes inspiration from the Watts collection, ethos or environment
  • the display looks attractive in daylight
  • to consider the potential of visitors contributing to the installation in some way
  • the sculpture is weatherproof, safe and tough
  • to be self-secure – the estate is accessible 24hrs
  • limited outdoor electrical power sources
  • to be in keeping with the ecosystem
  • environmental – to consider use of solar energy and re-use materials
  • gallery staff should be able to turn the illuminations off at night for purposes of security and consideration of neighbours.
  • priority areas for the illuminations are marked on the attached map (Limnerslease Woodlands to the left and the Gallery area to the right of the map)
