Shi Rongqiang is a Chinese ink painter whose technique is representative of traditional Chinese ink painting but whose innovative contemporary style and subjects reveal a deep commentary on human relationships and the changing role of the individual within society. Choosing to anthropomorphise the subjects of his works, namely animals, Shi Rongqiang’s paintings reveal the subtle but strained relationships of humans within society and with one another, reflecting the reality of contemporary social tensions.
